Victor Ferdinand von Hinter Song: "Til We Die" by Slipknot Origin: Renaissance (16th century) Eisenach, Germany Sire: Hamasaki Hachi
Height: 55 in / 140 cm Weight: 80 lbs / 36 kg Mortal age: 10 years Immortal age (at end of story): ~500 years Hair color: white-blond Eye color: dark gray Ethnicity: German Blood type: AB-
Victor was born in 1540 into upper-class Germany, and he dresses and acts the part. The von Hinter family, for generations, was a highly reputable clan of "Holy hunters." Basically, this means they hunted down anyone who, by means voluntary or not, practiced maleficium, or evil deeds (read "witch hunters"). Victor is the youngest of 8 children, and it took the von Hinter family the 10 years of Victor's mortal life to realize that Hachi Hamasaki, their next-door neighbor, was a vampire. (So much for being highly reputable).
The spider on Vic's shoulder here is named Anansi, and she is an Avicularia purpurea, Ecuadorean purple pink-toe. Victor is fascinated by tarantulas, and has several pet spiders of his own. Two of them (Anansi included) are rather docile; the other four are NASTY sons-of-bitches, and they make no secret of their hatred for everyone in the house (particularly Lamia), except for Victor. He thinks it's hilarious. Lamia on the other hand, who is uncomfortable with normal-sized spiders, is seriously freaked out. XD
Anyway...
For reasons known only to sire and fledgling, Hachi changed Victor into a vampire at 10 years old. Victor never talks about it. Hachi insists that he would not have done such a thing to a child if it was not absolutely necessary, but that vague answer is as good as his explanations get. Hachi was drawn to Victor because of his pure, unbiased logic and vast intelligence. He is far wiser than the rest of the cast, but unfortunately, he is often not taken seriously. Most people (Lamia in particular) tend to forget to look beyond the child's exterior. He hates being condescended to or treated like a kid, which happens much more often than he believes is reasonable. Because people often underestimate and/or undervalue him, he has developed other ways of making people listen to him - namely, a forceful personality. He tends to be stiff and stubborn when interacting with others, and is sometimes unnecessarily cold or haughty, and even downright rude. He does have a sense of humor and is known to lighten up in friendly circumstances (or when he makes a new discovery). However, when it comes down to it, you'll find that nobody has greater faith and trust in the gang of misfit vampires than Victor does. Once you know the whole story, Victor's personality suddenly makes worlds more sense, but me no spoiler. His lyric is:
Our friends are all hurting from moments and regrets And charity laced with a lie. Still we keep hoping to fix all the defects And strengthen these seminal times. We go on together, for better or worse, Our history is too real to hate. Now and forever we stay until morning, And promise to fight for our fate Til we die.
The start of a journey is every bit worth it, I can't let you down anymore. The sky is still clearing, we're never afraid And the consequence opens the door. I never stopped trying, I never stopped feeling like Family is much more than blood. Don't go on without me, the piece that I represent Complements each and everyone, Til we die.
Til we die, We wont be forgotten, we'll never give in. This war we've achieved has allowed us to win.
My last true confession will open your eyes. I've never known trust like the nine. Let it be spoken, let it be screamed -- They'll never ever take us alive!
Til we die...
Victor is very firm in his beliefs, and he intensely dislikes it when people try to argue with him. Like Veni, he's pretty straightforward. But unlike Veni (who will try to find kinder, less-rude ways of saying things), Victor isn't at all afraid to be blunt with you. However, despite his conceived candidness, one can't help but get the feeling that he's hiding something...
Hehe, Victor's funny about hugs... if he can tell it's sincere, or that it has nothing to do with treating him like a kid, then he'd gladly hug you back. Just make sure there isn't a spider on his shoulder before you do!
I definitely get that... people at GC are really condescending when I show some sign of not knowing exactly what I'm doing. It's funny how people tend to condescend more when you act younger... the "growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional" motto only works if as nobody actually treats you like a kid because of it!

I was mostly thinking of Jimmy with the condescendtion thing....*snarls* I haven't been treated with much condescention by the other students (mostly because I keep my mouth shut) but sometimes at HACC and Mount St. Mary's, I got that from the teachers and the admins. At Penn State it's pretty good so far.

whoa, whoa, whoa. Back up a second... didn't Hachi die at some point at the end of the book? Am I stepping over the line a bit by asking if I missed something here? But all that aside, sounds like a good character to me (Gil's still my favorite though).

No, you didn't miss anything. Buuut, that doesn't mean I said everything... Let's just say you read things exactly how I wanted you to read them. Remember that little flashback, the last thing in chapter 10, right before the epilogue? Lamia was talking about himself at that point... well, now, it's about Hachi.
Aw, thanks! Glad you like him, on first inspection!

Ahh, gotcha. Well, that's a good thing at least. One more thing to like about Penn State!
